The Distant Reader is a tool for reading at scale. Based on prior work with an XSEDE startup grant as well as an HPC Consortium grant focused on a data set of 150,000 scientific journal articles on the topic of COVID-19, we propose to: 1) increase the breadth and depth of the Distant Reader's functionality, 2) create a "library" of Distant Reader outputs (data sets) affectionately called "study carrels", and 3) demonstrate to the wider scholarly community the benefits of using computers to supplement the traditional reading process. We are requesting 200,000 Jetstream SU's, 3 TB of disk space, and support from both ECSS and SGCI.
